Facts About Poland
Information for Travelers
Poland is a parliamentary republic in Central Europe.
The capital and largest city in the country is Warsaw, the largest metropolitan area is the metropolitan area around Katowice.
Other cities with more than 400,000 inhabitants are Krakow, Lodz, Wroclaw, Poznan, Gdansk and Szczecin.
One of the oldest cities in Poland, Krakow was already inhabited back in the 7th century.
As the city escaped most of the WWII destruction that befell other Polish cities, the center of Krakow's Old Town still retains its impressive medieval architecture.
Wavel Castle and the historic district of Kazimierz - also known as the Old Jewish Quarter - in the area have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Culture
Poland has a history stretching back almost a thousand years, with impressive medieval architecture, remnants of World War II and its devastation, and castles and palaces in every corner of the country.
But this ancient country is also home to extensive national parks, mountains and lakes, with seemingly endless trails cutting through virgin nature waiting to be explored.
The Tatra Mountains and National Park form a natural border between Slovakia and Poland, although most of the mountain range falls into Slovakia.
As there are no more borders between EU countries, it is now possible to easily take walks between countries.
