UK Time Zone

The United Kingdom uses one civil time zone nationwide. It follows Greenwich Mean Time (GMT, UTC+00:00) in the standard-time period and British Summer Time (BST, UTC+01:00) in summer. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland change clocks together.

The UK is not on GMT all year. GMT is the winter/standard-time label; BST is one hour ahead during the summer-time period. For software and date-aware calculations, use Europe/London rather than hardcoding GMT or BST.

When Do the UK Clocks Change?

Under current UK rules, clocks go forward by one hour at 1:00 a.m. GMT on the last Sunday in March and go back by one hour at 2:00 a.m. BST on the last Sunday in October. In 2026, the change dates are March 29 and October 25.

UK Clock Changes: 2026–2030

The recurring legal rule is more important than any one year's dates: the last Sunday in March starts BST and the last Sunday in October returns the UK to GMT.

Does the UK Observe Daylight Saving Time?

Yes. The UK changes clocks twice each year. The summer period is called British Summer Time (BST), not simply “GMT+1” in ordinary UK usage.

SpringAt 1:00 a.m. GMT on the last Sunday in March, the clock jumps forward to 2:00 a.m. BST.
SummerThe UK runs one hour ahead of GMT at UTC+01:00.
AutumnAt 2:00 a.m. BST on the last Sunday in October, the clock moves back to 1:00 a.m. GMT.
WinterThe UK returns to GMT at UTC+00:00.

UK Time Is Not the Same as “GMT” All Year

Calling UK time “GMT” year-round is a common shortcut, but it is inaccurate during British Summer Time. A date-aware system should use Europe/London, then read the resulting abbreviation and UTC offset for the date being calculated.

UTCThe international reference scale; UK standard time aligns with UTC, while BST is UTC+1.

GMT, BST, UTC & Europe/London — What Each Means

These terms are related but not interchangeable. Separating them prevents the most common UK time-zone mistakes.

Standard Time

GMT · UTC+00:00

Greenwich Mean Time is the UK's standard-time label in the winter period.

Summer Time

BST · UTC+01:00

British Summer Time is one hour ahead of GMT and is used during the UK summer-time period.

IANA

Europe/London

The preferred identifier for software because it includes recurring GMT/BST transitions and historical rule changes.

Reference Scale

UTC

UK standard time is aligned with UTC. During BST, UK civil time is UTC+01:00.

National Coverage

One UK Clock

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland always change together under the same civil-time rule.

Scope

UK ≠ All British Territories

British Overseas Territories are outside the UK's Europe/London civil-time system and use local time-zone rules.

Quick UK Time Zone Compare

Compare the UK with another major location right now. The calculation uses current IANA offsets, so differences automatically reflect seasonal clock changes on both sides.

How the UK Time Zone Works

Six rules answer most questions about the United Kingdom's time zone, UTC offset and seasonal changes.

01 · One Clock

The Whole UK Changes Together

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland share one national civil time.

02 · Winter

GMT Is UTC+00:00

During standard time, UK civil time aligns with Coordinated Universal Time.

03 · Summer

BST Is UTC+01:00

The UK advances clocks by one hour for British Summer Time.

04 · Spring Rule

Last Sunday in March

At 01:00 GMT the clock jumps forward to 02:00 BST.

05 · Autumn Rule

Last Sunday in October

At 02:00 BST the clock repeats the 01:00 hour in GMT.

06 · Software

Use Europe/London

The IANA identifier is safer than hardcoding GMT or BST because the offset depends on the date.

Europe/London vs GMT or BST

Europe/London is a location-based IANA time-zone identifier. GMT and BST are the seasonal labels used by the UK. If an application needs to calculate UK time across dates, Europe/London is the correct choice because it knows when the offset changes.

UK UTC Offset & International Differences

The UK's current offset is date-aware. Because other countries change clocks on different dates—or do not change them at all—the time difference from the UK is not always a fixed number of hours.

UK ↔ ParisParis is normally one hour ahead because the UK and most of continental Europe change on the same EU-style dates.
UK ↔ New YorkUsually five hours apart, but temporarily four because U.S. and UK clock-change dates do not match.
UK ↔ São PauloThe difference changes when the UK enters or leaves BST because São Paulo currently stays on one offset year-round.
UK ↔ SydneyThe gap changes seasonally on both sides because the UK and Sydney observe DST in opposite hemispheres.

Sources & Methodology

UK clock-change rules are checked against official UK guidance and the National Physical Laboratory. Live clocks, abbreviations and UTC offsets use the Europe/London IANA time zone rather than a hardcoded GMT/BST assumption.
