Australia Time Zone

Australia has three principal standard time zones across its states and mainland territories: AWST, ACST and AEST. But that simple answer is not the whole story. Australia also has half-hour and quarter-hour local offsets, a 30-minute daylight-saving change on Lord Howe Island, and different DST rules from one state or territory to another.

Why do some websites say Australia has 3, 5, 8 or 9 time zones? The count depends on what is included. Three describes the principal state and mainland-territory standard zones. Higher counts can include Eucla, Lord Howe Island, daylight-saving variants and Australia's external territories. For an actual clock, use the location-specific IANA zone rather than a single national offset.

Australia's Main Time Zones & Special Local Offsets

The first three rows are Australia's principal standard zones. Eucla and Lord Howe are included because they explain why a real-world time-zone list can contain more than three current offsets.

Why Australia Can Have More Than 3 Time Zones

“Australia has three time zones” is a useful shorthand for AWST, ACST and AEST across the states and mainland territories. It becomes incomplete when a user needs exact civil time. Eucla uses UTC+08:45 locally, Lord Howe Island uses UTC+10:30 standard time, southern jurisdictions create ACDT and AEDT during daylight saving, and external territories such as Christmas Island, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Norfolk Island use additional rules.

Does Australia Observe Daylight Saving Time?

Only part of Australia changes clocks. New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory observe daylight saving. Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia do not. This means Sydney and Brisbane can share the same time in winter but differ by one hour in summer.

NSW, Victoria, Tasmania & ACTAEST UTC+10 → AEDT UTC+11 during daylight saving.
South Australia & Broken HillACST UTC+9:30 → ACDT UTC+10:30 during daylight saving.
Queensland, Northern Territory & Western AustraliaNo daylight saving under current rules.
Lord Howe IslandAdvances only 30 minutes: LHST UTC+10:30 → LHDT UTC+11.

Australia Daylight Saving Dates

In 2026, daylight saving ended on April 5 and begins again on October 4 in the jurisdictions that observe it. The recurring rule is the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April.

Start ruleFirst Sunday in October. Most observing jurisdictions move clocks forward one hour.
End ruleFirst Sunday in April. Most observing jurisdictions move clocks back one hour.
Lord Howe exceptionThe seasonal shift is 30 minutes, not one hour.

AEST vs AEDT, ACST vs ACDT, and AWST

Australian abbreviations describe the clock currently in use. The same state can change abbreviation and UTC offset when daylight saving starts or ends.

Eastern Standard

AEST · UTC+10

Used in Queensland year-round and as standard time in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT.

Eastern Daylight

AEDT · UTC+11

Used seasonally in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania and the ACT. Queensland does not switch to AEDT.

Central Standard

ACST · UTC+9:30

Used in South Australia and the Northern Territory; Broken Hill in NSW also follows central-time rules.

Central Daylight

ACDT · UTC+10:30

Used seasonally in South Australia and Broken Hill. Darwin remains on ACST.

Western Standard

AWST · UTC+8

Used throughout Western Australia year-round. Perth does not observe daylight saving.

Special Local Time

ACWST · UTC+8:45

Used locally around Eucla near the Western Australia–South Australia border, with no seasonal clock change.

How Australia's Time Zones Work

Six rules explain most Australian time-zone questions—from the three principal standard zones to half-hour offsets and state-based daylight saving.

01 · Principal Zones

Start with AWST, ACST & AEST

These are the three standard zones used across Australia's states and mainland territories.

02 · Half Hours

Central Time Is UTC+9:30

South Australia and the Northern Territory show why Australian offsets do not all land on whole hours.

03 · Quarter Hours

Eucla Uses UTC+8:45

ACWST is a local quarter-hour time used around Eucla, adding another real-world offset beyond the national shorthand.

04 · DST Split

State Rules Diverge in Summer

Sydney moves to AEDT while Brisbane stays on AEST; Adelaide moves to ACDT while Darwin stays on ACST.

05 · Special Island

Lord Howe Moves Only 30 Minutes

Lord Howe Island's seasonal change is half an hour, one of the most distinctive civil-time rules in the world.

06 · Software

Use a Location-Specific IANA Zone

Australia/Sydney is not a universal Australia identifier. Use the IANA zone that matches the actual location and requested date.

Australia UTC Offsets

There is no single “Australia UTC offset.” Across the main country and special localities, common civil offsets include whole-hour, half-hour and quarter-hour values, and daylight saving changes some of them seasonally.

UTC+08:00AWST — Perth and most of Western Australia.
UTC+08:45ACWST — Eucla area local time.
UTC+09:30ACST — Adelaide standard time, Darwin year-round, Broken Hill standard time.
UTC+10:00AEST — Brisbane year-round; Sydney/Melbourne/Canberra standard time.
UTC+10:30ACDT in South Australia during DST and LHST on Lord Howe during standard time.
UTC+11:00AEDT in observing eastern jurisdictions and LHDT on Lord Howe during daylight saving.

Sources & Methodology

Australian standard-time and daylight-saving coverage is checked against Australian state-government and regulator references. Live clocks, offsets and abbreviations use IANA-compatible browser time-zone data for each named location rather than a single hardcoded national offset.

Australia Time Zones FAQ

What time zone is Australia in?

Australia is not in one time zone. Its three principal standard zones are AWST (UTC+8), ACST (UTC+9:30) and AEST (UTC+10), with special local zones and seasonal daylight-saving variants.

How many time zones does Australia have?

Three is the conventional count for the principal standard zones across the states and mainland territories. Exact civil-time counts are higher when Eucla, Lord Howe Island, daylight-saving variants and external territories are included.

Does Australia use daylight saving time?

Yes, but not nationwide. NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT observe daylight saving. Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia do not.

When does daylight saving start and end in Australia?

In the jurisdictions that observe it, daylight saving generally begins on the first Sunday in October and ends on the first Sunday in April. Lord Howe Island follows the seasonal period but changes by only 30 minutes.

What time zone is Sydney in?

Sydney uses AEST, UTC+10, in standard time and AEDT, UTC+11, during daylight saving. The IANA identifier is Australia/Sydney.

What time zone is Brisbane in?

Brisbane uses AEST, UTC+10, throughout the year because Queensland does not observe daylight saving.

What time zone is Adelaide in?

Adelaide uses ACST, UTC+9:30, during standard time and ACDT, UTC+10:30, during daylight saving.

What time zone is Perth in?

Perth uses AWST, UTC+8, throughout the year and does not observe daylight saving.

Why is Eucla 45 minutes different?

Eucla and a small nearby area use ACWST at UTC+8:45. It is a special quarter-hour local time near the Western Australia–South Australia border.

Why does Lord Howe Island change clocks by only 30 minutes?

Lord Howe standard time is UTC+10:30, and its daylight-saving rule advances clocks by 30 minutes to UTC+11 rather than by a full hour.

Which IANA time zone should I use for Australia?

Use the identifier for the actual location, such as Australia/Sydney, Australia/Brisbane, Australia/Adelaide, Australia/Darwin, Australia/Perth, Australia/Broken_Hill, Australia/Eucla or Australia/Lord_Howe.
