New Zealand Time Zone

New Zealand proper uses two civil time zones. Most of the country follows New Zealand Standard Time (NZST, UTC+12) and New Zealand Daylight Time (NZDT, UTC+13). The Chatham Islands are always 45 minutes ahead, using CHAST (UTC+12:45) or CHADT (UTC+13:45).

Why Sources Say New Zealand Has 2, 3 or 5 Time Zones

For New Zealand proper, the clearest answer is two main civil time zones: the main-island zone and the Chatham Islands zone. A count of three often adds Tokelau, a dependency that uses UTC+13 year-round. Still larger totals may include additional associated or outlying territories. Those broader counts are useful for political geography, but they should not obscure the two clocks a traveler encounters within New Zealand proper.
