Italy uses one legal civil time nationwide: Central European Time (CET, UTC+01:00) in standard time and Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+02:00) during summer time. The primary IANA identifier is Europe/Rome, which automatically applies the seasonal clock changes.

CET and CEST are not two geographic Italian time zones. They are the standard-time and summer-time phases of the same national clock. In 2026, Italy entered CEST on March 29 and returns to CET on October 25.

What Happens When Italy Changes Clocks?

The transition is national, so every Italian city and region changes at the same moment.

Spring: CET → CESTAt 02:00 local standard time, the clock jumps forward to 03:00. The local hour from 02:00 to 02:59 does not occur.
Summer: CEST · UTC+02:00Italy remains two hours ahead of UTC until the autumn transition.
Autumn: CEST → CETAt 03:00 local summer time, the clock moves back to 02:00. The 02:00 hour occurs twice.
Winter: CET · UTC+01:00Italy remains one hour ahead of UTC until the next spring change.

Do Sicily or Sardinia Use a Different Time Zone?

No. Italy’s two largest islands use the same national clock as the mainland. Palermo, Catania and the rest of Sicily, as well as Cagliari and the rest of Sardinia, change between CET and CEST at the same instant as Rome, Milan, Venice and Naples.
