Spain Time Zone

Spain has two civil time-zone schedules. Peninsular Spain and the Balearic Islands use Central European Time (CET, UTC+01:00) in standard time and Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+02:00) in summer. The Canary Islands use Western European Time (WET, UTC+00:00) and Western European Summer Time (WEST, UTC+01:00), staying one hour behind the mainland.

Two civil clocks, three useful IANA identifiers. For software and date-aware calculations, use Europe/Madrid for peninsular Spain and the Balearics, Atlantic/Canary for the Canary Islands and Africa/Ceuta for Ceuta. Ceuta shares the mainland clock today, but a separate IANA identifier preserves its location-specific historical rules.

The Canary Islands are one hour behind mainland Spain all year because both schedules change on the same European transition dates while preserving different base offsets.

CET, CEST, WET & WEST in Spain

Spain's time-zone abbreviations can look like four different zones, but they describe two regional clock schedules across two seasons. Mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands alternate CET ↔ CEST. The Canary Islands alternate WET ↔ WEST. The underlying one-hour gap between the two regions remains constant.

Does Spain Observe Daylight Saving Time?

Yes. Spain follows the European summer-time schedule. The clock change affects both civil time-zone schedules at the same moment in UTC, keeping the Canary Islands one hour behind the mainland.

Abbreviations describe seasonal offsets; IANA zones describe a location and its date-aware rules.

Mainland Standard

CET · UTC+01:00

Peninsular Spain, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla use the Central European standard-time clock.

Mainland Summer

CEST · UTC+02:00

The same regions advance one hour during the European summer-time period.

Canary Standard

WET · UTC+00:00

The Canary Islands use Western European Time in the standard-time period.

Canary Summer

WEST · UTC+01:00

The islands advance one hour during summer, preserving the one-hour gap from mainland Spain.

IANA

Europe/Madrid & Atlantic/Canary

These are the primary date-aware identifiers for Spain's two civil clock schedules.

Ceuta

Africa/Ceuta

Ceuta uses the same civil clock as mainland Spain today, while its separate IANA zone preserves location-specific history.

How Spain's Time Zones Work

Six rules explain almost every Spain time-zone question.

01 · Two Clocks

Spain Is a Two-Time-Zone Country

Mainland/Balearic Spain and the Canary Islands have different civil clocks.

02 · One-Hour Gap

The Canary Islands Stay Behind

The Canary clock remains one hour behind Madrid because both regions transition seasonally on the same schedule.

03 · Balearics

Majorca Is Mainland Time

Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera use the same Europe/Madrid schedule as Barcelona and Madrid.

04 · North Africa

Ceuta & Melilla Use Mainland Time

Spain's North African autonomous cities do not use Canary Islands time. Their present civil clock matches peninsular Spain.

05 · IANA

Use Location-Based IDs

Europe/Madrid, Atlantic/Canary and Africa/Ceuta are safer than hardcoding a seasonal abbreviation or UTC offset.

06 · History

Legal Time Is Not Just Longitude

Spain's mainland clock reflects legal and historical decisions, which is why western parts of the country use Central European civil time.

Why Does Mainland Spain Use CET?

Geography alone does not determine a country's legal clock. The Spanish Navy Observatory's official history records a one-hour advance on March 16, 1940. Mainland Spain did not return to its earlier relationship with Greenwich time after that change, and its modern legal-time system later became aligned with the European CET/CEST framework.

Longitude vs civil timeMuch of Spain lies west of the Greenwich meridian, yet legal time on the mainland is one hour ahead of UTC in winter.
Canary IslandsThe islands use the Western European clock family, maintaining a one-hour difference from peninsular Spain.
Modern schedulingUse current legal rules and IANA data rather than trying to infer Spanish time from longitude.

Looking for the Current Time in Spain?

If your main question is what time it is in Spain right now, use the country current-time page. It keeps mainland Spain and the Canary Islands separate instead of presenting Madrid as a universal national clock.

Sources & Methodology

Spain's official clock-change framework is based on Spanish law and the Real Instituto y Observatorio de la Armada. The European Commission's published schedule supplies the future summer-time calendar, while live offsets and abbreviations are generated from IANA-compatible location data rather than a permanently hardcoded national offset.

Last reviewed: August 21, 2026. Live values are calculated by location and date. Spain's legal time and European summer-time rules can change, so future transitions should remain data-driven.

Spain Time Zone FAQ

What time zone is Spain in?

Peninsular Spain and the Balearic Islands use CET in standard time and CEST in summer. The Canary Islands use WET and WEST and remain one hour behind the mainland.

How many time zones does Spain have?

Spain has two civil clock schedules: mainland/Balearic time and Canary Islands time. Three IANA identifiers are especially useful: Europe/Madrid, Atlantic/Canary and Africa/Ceuta.

Are the Canary Islands one hour behind mainland Spain?

Yes. The Canary Islands are one hour behind Madrid and Barcelona throughout the year because both regions change clocks on the same schedule while keeping different UTC offsets.

Does Spain observe daylight saving time?

Yes. Spain moves clocks forward on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October.

When does Spain change clocks in 2026?

Spain began summer time on March 29, 2026 and returns to standard time on October 25, 2026.

What is Spain's UTC offset?

There is no single year-round Spain offset. Mainland Spain is UTC+01:00 in CET and UTC+02:00 in CEST. The Canary Islands are UTC+00:00 in WET and UTC+01:00 in WEST.

Do Ceuta and Melilla use Canary Islands time?

No. Ceuta and Melilla use the same civil clock schedule as peninsular Spain, not the Canary Islands.

Which IANA time zone should I use for Spain?

Use Europe/Madrid for peninsular Spain and the Balearic Islands, Atlantic/Canary for the Canary Islands and Africa/Ceuta for Ceuta.

Why is mainland Spain in CET?

Spain's legal clock reflects historical policy rather than longitude alone. The Spanish Navy Observatory records a one-hour official clock advance on March 16, 1940, after which the mainland remained aligned with the Central European clock framework.
