Financial Market Hours

Compare when major financial markets open, close and pause. U.S. stocks use a defined cash-equity session, spot forex rotates around the world during the business week, CME futures trade on product-specific Globex schedules, fixed income follows venue and dealer conventions, and CME cryptocurrency futures now operate 24/7.

Quick Answer

What are financial market hours?

There is no universal “financial market open” time. Each asset class has its own venue structure. NYSE and Nasdaq regular U.S. stock trading runs 9:30 AM–4:00 PM ET. Nasdaq also offers 4:00–9:30 AM pre-market and 4:00–8:00 PM after-hours.

Spot forex is decentralized and trades approximately 24 hours through the business week. OANDA currently lists most FX products from Sunday 5:05 PM to Friday 4:59 PM New York time, with a brief daily reset. CME futures are product-specific; many equity-index contracts use a nearly 23-hour weekday Globex day with a daily maintenance period. CME cryptocurrency futures and options have traded 24/7 since May 29, 2026, subject to weekly maintenance.

StocksNYSE/Nasdaq regular cash equities: 9:30 AM–4:00 PM ET.
ForexDecentralized weekday market; broker operating hours and daily resets differ.
FuturesMany CME products trade overnight, but the exact schedule belongs to the product.
Fixed incomeNo single universal bond-market session; venue, dealer and SIFMA conventions matter.
Crypto futuresCME regulated cryptocurrency futures/options now trade 24/7 with weekly maintenance.

Choose the Market First

The fastest accurate answer is asset class → product → venue → time zone → holiday calendar. A stock closing bell, a forex session overlap and a CME maintenance break are not interchangeable events.

Futures: Nearly Around-the-Clock, but Product-Specific

Many CME Globex equity-index products use a schedule close to Sunday 6:00 PM through Friday 5:00 PM ET with a daily maintenance interval. Other contracts use different sessions, halts or product windows. Never apply S&P futures hours automatically to crude oil, agricultural futures or every CME contract.

Holiday Planning

One Holiday Can Produce Different Hours in Different Markets

Labor Day on Monday, September 7, 2026 closes the NYSE/Nasdaq cash stock market. CME products use product-specific holiday hours, while spot forex can remain available with broker-specific liquidity and operating rules. Fixed income follows SIFMA recommendations and dealer decisions rather than one universal mandatory exchange close.

Forex: A Global Week, Not a Single Exchange Day

Spot FX is decentralized. OANDA currently lists most FX instruments from Sunday 5:05 PM to Friday 4:59 PM New York time, with a brief daily reset. Liquidity rotates through Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York, and the London–New York overlap is one of the most active periods. DST changes can shift the relationship between local session times.

Fixed Income: Exchange Hours + Dealer Conventions

NYSE Bonds provides one concrete venue example: 4:00–8:00 AM ET early trading, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM core trading and 5:00–8:00 PM late trading. The wider U.S. bond and Treasury markets also depend on electronic venues and dealers. SIFMA publishes holiday close recommendations — often 2:00 PM ET early closes — but explicitly says each member firm decides whether its fixed-income desks remain open.

CME Crypto Futures Are Now 24/7

CME Group launched 24/7 cryptocurrency futures and options trading on May 29, 2026. The contracts trade continuously on CME Globex with at least a two-hour weekly maintenance period. CME also notes that weekend or holiday trading from Friday evening through Sunday evening uses the following business day for clearing, settlement and regulatory reporting.

Official reference points behind these market-hour baselines

CalendarHours uses venue, exchange, broker and industry-body schedules rather than forcing every financial market into the same opening-hours model.

NYSECore equities 9:30 AM–4:00 PM ET; NYSE Bonds 4:00 AM–8:00 PM across early, core and late sessions.
NasdaqPre-market 4:00–9:30 AM, regular 9:30 AM–4:00 PM, post-market 4:00–8:00 PM ET.
OANDACurrent broker example for FX: Sunday 5:05 PM–Friday 4:59 PM New York time with a short daily reset.
CMEMany Globex products use near-23-hour weekday schedules; cryptocurrency futures/options now operate 24/7.
SIFMAFixed-income holiday close recommendations are influential but explicitly non-mandatory for member firms.

Why “Open Now” Means Something Different by Market

A stock can be in after-hours while S&P futures are still trading, spot FX remains liquid, bonds are outside their deepest U.S. cash window and CME crypto futures remain open. The live panel is therefore a planning dashboard, not a universal market-open switch.

Financial Market Hours: Before You Trade

The reliable sequence is asset → product → venue → session → local time zone → holiday. That prevents a 24/7 crypto-futures schedule, a weekday forex market and a 9:30 AM stock opening bell from being treated as the same kind of market.

StocksUse NYSE/Nasdaq regular and extended-hours pages.
ForexUse session pages and broker operating hours; there is no single centralized spot FX exchange.
FuturesCheck the exact CME product because Globex schedules and holiday hours vary.
BondsSeparate exchange hours from OTC dealer conventions and SIFMA recommendations.
Crypto futuresCME is now continuous 24/7, but weekly maintenance and trade-date rules still matter.

Frequently Asked Questions About Financial Market Hours

What are financial market hours?

There is no single universal financial-market schedule. U.S. cash stocks, spot forex, futures, bonds, Treasuries and crypto derivatives operate on different venues and clocks. The correct hours depend on the asset, exchange or dealer market, product and holiday calendar.

What are U.S. stock market hours?

NYSE and Nasdaq regular cash-equity trading runs from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Time on normal trading days. Nasdaq pre-market runs 4:00–9:30 AM ET and after-hours runs 4:00–8:00 PM ET.

What are forex market hours?

Spot forex is decentralized and generally trades around the clock during the business week. As one current broker example, OANDA lists most FX products from Sunday 5:05 PM to Friday 4:59 PM New York time with a brief daily maintenance/reset break.

What are futures market hours?

Futures hours are product-specific. Many CME Globex equity-index products trade from Sunday 6:00 PM to Friday 5:00 PM Eastern Time with a daily maintenance period, while other agricultural, energy and specialized products use different schedules.

Are CME crypto futures open 24/7?

Yes. CME Group launched 24/7 trading for its cryptocurrency futures and options on May 29, 2026. Trading is continuous with at least a two-hour weekly maintenance period over the weekend, and weekend or holiday trades can receive the following business day's trade date for clearing and reporting.

What are bond market hours?

There is no single mandatory U.S. bond-market session because fixed income trades across exchanges and dealer markets. NYSE Bonds publishes early trading from 4:00–8:00 AM ET, core trading 8:00 AM–5:00 PM and late trading 5:00–8:00 PM. Broader fixed-income markets also follow dealer conventions and SIFMA holiday recommendations.

Are Treasury market hours the same as stock market hours?

No. U.S. Treasuries trade in a dealer and electronic fixed-income ecosystem that is different from NYSE/Nasdaq cash equities. Treasury and bond markets can have different liquidity windows and holiday recommendations, including SIFMA-recommended 2:00 PM early closes.

Are financial markets open on weekends?

Most traditional stock, bond and weekday futures markets do not maintain their normal sessions throughout Saturday and Sunday. Spot crypto is generally continuous, and CME cryptocurrency futures and options have operated 24/7 since May 29, 2026, subject to weekly maintenance.

What market opens first each day?

The answer depends on the asset and your time zone. Forex liquidity rotates through Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York sessions, many futures trade overnight on CME Globex, and U.S. stocks have pre-market before the 9:30 AM ET regular opening bell.

Are bank holidays the same as market holidays?

No. Stock, futures, fixed-income and bank calendars overlap but differ. Good Friday closes NYSE and Nasdaq, while Columbus Day and Veterans Day leave the U.S. stock market open even though many bank branches close. Futures and bond markets can use their own holiday schedules or recommended early closes.
