The regular U.S. stock market session runs from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern Time on normal trading days. NYSE calls this its Core Trading Session, and Nasdaq calls it Regular Market Hours. Both use the same 9:30 AM opening and 4:00 PM closing reference for standard U.S. equities.

Extended-hours trading adds access outside the regular session. Nasdaq currently publishes pre-market from 4:00 AM to 9:30 AM ET and after-hours from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM ET. Those windows do not mean every broker or every security is available for the entire period.

Opening & Closing Auctions Matter

NYSE’s published schedule adds important mechanics around the headline hours. The Core Open Auction occurs at 9:30 AM ET. The closing imbalance period runs from 3:50 PM to 4:00 PM ET, followed by the Closing Auction at 4:00 PM ET. These events help establish official opening and closing prices.

Nasdaq’s official current day-session structure runs from 4:00 AM to 8:00 PM ET: pre-market 4:00–9:30 AM, regular market 9:30 AM–4:00 PM, and post-market 4:00–8:00 PM. NYSE Group venues have their own early and late sessions. Liquidity, spreads, order types and broker access can differ materially outside 9:30 AM–4:00 PM.

Is the Stock Market Becoming 24/5?

The regular market is still 9:30 AM–4:00 PM ET. U.S. exchanges are separately expanding toward nearly continuous weekday trading. Nasdaq’s approved rule framework defines a future 9:00 PM–4:00 AM ET Night Session, but its rules state that operation depends on consolidated market-data readiness and additional implementation steps. NYSE Arca’s May 2026 FAQ targets December 6, 2026 for 23-hour trading, subject to approvals and infrastructure readiness.
