Nasdaq after-hours trading runs from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Eastern Time on business days. Nasdaq’s rulebook calls this Post-Market Hours. NYSE Arca also publishes a Late Trading Session from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM ET on normal trading days.

NYSE Late Trading Is Venue-Specific

NYSE Group publishes different extended sessions by venue. NYSE Arca has a normal Late Trading Session from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM ET. NYSE National also has late trading. On scheduled U.S. early-close days, NYSE specifies that several late sessions close at 5:00 PM ET, so traders should not assume a normal 8:00 PM finish.

Early Close Does Not Guarantee Normal 4–8 PM After-Hours

On a full NYSE/Nasdaq holiday, the standard U.S. post-market session does not run. On scheduled 1:00 PM ET early-close days, exchange systems can use special hours. NYSE states that several late trading sessions close at 5:00 PM ET on the 2026 early-close dates; Nasdaq tells customers to use its Trader Alerts for exact system operating times.

After-Hours Does Not Replace the Official 4 PM Closing Price

FINRA explains that the exchange price recorded at 4:00 PM ET is the official closing price for the trading day. A stock can move sharply at 4:15 PM after earnings, but that after-hours price does not replace the official closing print used for the day’s close and many end-of-day valuations.

After-Hours Can Move Far From the 4 PM Close

Earnings releases, guidance, analyst actions and breaking news often arrive after the regular session. With fewer participants and lower liquidity, prices can move quickly and spreads can widen. The next day’s official opening price is determined around the new opening process, not mechanically carried over from the final after-hours trade.

After-Hours ≠ Overnight Trading

Traditional after-hours ends at 8:00 PM ET for Nasdaq’s current post-market. Robinhood then has a separate overnight session for eligible securities, and Schwab offers overnight access on thinkorswim for an eligible universe. Nasdaq is developing a separate 9:00 PM–4:00 AM ET Night Session, but current availability depends on implementation and market-data infrastructure readiness.

Limit Orders Are Common in Extended Hours

Broker rules often restrict order types outside regular hours. Fidelity requires limit orders in its extended sessions, Schwab’s extended-hours agreements specify limit-order use, and Robinhood says market orders submitted during extended or overnight sessions queue for the next regular market open rather than execute as market orders in those sessions.
