What time does pre-market open?

Nasdaq pre-market trading runs from 4:00 AM to 9:30 AM Eastern Time on business days. NYSE Arca equities also have an Early Trading Session from 4:00 AM to 9:30 AM ET. At 9:30 AM ET, the regular U.S. cash-equity session begins.

The key distinction is that exchange hours are not the same as broker hours. Fidelity currently offers pre-market execution from 7:00–9:28 AM ET; Charles Schwab lists 7:00–9:25 AM ET; and Robinhood’s standard extended-hours pre-market window is 7:00–9:30 AM ET. A quote moving at 4:15 AM does not mean your broker necessarily lets you trade it then.

NYSE Premarket Is Venue-Specific

NYSE Group does not use one identical 4:00 AM rule across every venue. NYSE Arca accepts pre-opening orders from 2:30 AM and runs Early Trading 4:00–9:30 AM ET. The main NYSE Tape A book has a 6:30 AM Pre-Opening Session where orders queue for the 9:30 AM opening auction, while certain Tapes B & C early trading begins at 7:00 AM.

Holiday Rule

Full Market Holiday = No Standard Premarket Session

NYSE and Nasdaq full-market holidays close the standard U.S. cash-equity trading day, including the normal pre-market window. After August 26, 2026, the next full U.S. market closure is Labor Day, Monday, September 7, 2026. Early-close days shorten the afternoon regular session, not the normal morning opening time.

Premarket Has Lower Liquidity & Wider Spreads

FINRA warns that extended-hours trading has fewer participants, which can make orders harder to execute and prices less competitive. Lower liquidity can also produce wider bid-ask spreads, partial fills or no fill at all. This is one reason brokerages commonly emphasize limit orders in extended sessions.

Earnings & News Can Increase Premarket Volatility

Corporate earnings, guidance, analyst actions and overnight macroeconomic news often hit outside regular trading hours. FINRA notes that extended-hours trading can be more volatile because fewer trades occur and investors react quickly to significant events. A premarket move can therefore change sharply by the 9:30 AM opening auction.

Premarket ≠ Overnight Trading

Several brokers now offer overnight access to selected stocks and ETFs. Robinhood, for example, separates its standard 7:00–9:30 AM pre-market from an 8:00 PM–7:00 AM overnight session for eligible securities. Schwab also offers overnight trading on thinkorswim for an eligible universe. These are distinct broker/venue sessions, not a redefinition of the traditional 4:00–9:30 AM exchange pre-market.

The reliable sequence is exchange → venue → broker → security → order type → holiday calendar. That prevents an exchange’s 4:00 AM availability from being mistaken for universal retail access.
