Pre-Market vs. Regular Market

Nasdaq currently defines Pre-Market Hours as 4:00 AM–9:30 AM ET and Regular Market Hours as 9:30 AM–4:00 PM ET. NYSE market families have their own pre-opening and early-session mechanics, so “the pre-market opens at X” should not be generalized across every venue and security.

After-Hours vs. Futures

Nasdaq’s current after-hours session runs 4:00 PM–8:00 PM ET. That is still equity extended-hours trading, not the same thing as futures. S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Dow, commodities and other futures trade on separate venues and schedules, commonly through CME Globex.

Next U.S. Market Closure

Labor Day — Monday, September 7, 2026

NYSE lists Labor Day as the next full market closure after August 26, 2026. Later in the year, NYSE schedules a 1:00 PM ET early close on Friday, November 27 and another 1:00 PM ET early close on Thursday, December 24. The regular market is closed Friday, December 25 for Christmas Day.

London, Tokyo & Hong Kong Use Different Session Structures

London Stock Exchange centers its market day around an 8:00 AM open and 4:30 PM close. Tokyo Stock Exchange uses a morning session 9:00–11:30 AM and afternoon session 12:30–3:30 PM. Hong Kong’s continuous securities trading runs 9:30 AM–12:00 PM and 1:00–4:00 PM. A single “global market open” time therefore does not exist.

ASX & Xetra: Auctions and Extended Retail Sessions Matter

ASX cash equities transition from pre-open into normal trading around 10:00 AM Sydney time and close normal trading at 4:00 PM, followed by closing-auction phases. Xetra’s main session remains 9:00 AM–5:30 PM CET/CEST, while an extended retail service has offered early and late trading from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM since December 2025.
