What happens from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM?

The Spanish equity market does not jump directly from “closed” to continuous trading at 9:00. BME runs an opening auction beginning at 8:30 AM.

During the auction, participants can enter, modify and cancel orders, but no trades execute until the equilibrium price is determined. BME adds a random ending of up to 30 seconds after 9:00 to reduce manipulation risk.

Orders not executed at the opening uncross can remain in the open market, subject to their validity conditions.

Why Madrid remains active after 5:30 PM

At 5:30 PM, continuous price discovery stops and the SIBE closing auction begins. That auction runs to about 5:35 PM and has its own random ending of up to 30 seconds.

BME then publishes Trading At Last from 5:35 PM to 5:45 PM. That extra ten-minute phase is one of the biggest omissions on simplified market-hours pages.

CalendarHours therefore changes the live badge through Closing Auction → Trading At Last → Closed, rather than calling the market closed at exactly 17:30.

Are IBEX 35 hours the same as Madrid Stock Exchange hours?

IBEX 35 is an index, not a separate exchange. Its constituent shares are traded through the Spanish cash-equity market, so a search for when IBEX 35 stocks are open generally maps to the SIBE schedule on this page.

But “IBEX trading hours” can also mean IBEX 35 futures, and those are MEFF derivatives with a much longer clock.

Why can IBEX 35 futures trade from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM?

BME’s current MEFF timetable lists an opening auction from 7:55–8:00 AM and electronic-order trading from 8:00 AM–8:00 PM for IBEX 35, Mini IBEX 35 and Micro IBEX 35 futures.

Prearranged and RFQ systems have their own endpoints. Those hours belong to derivatives, not to the SIBE cash-equity close.

Do Spanish ETFs use exactly the same close as stocks?

No. BME’s ETF page publishes 8:30–9:00 AM opening auction and an open session from 9:00 AM–5:35 PM.

The ETF closing price is calculated at 5:30 PM as the midpoint of the bid-ask spread, rounded upward. This is a different end-of-day mechanism from the SIBE equity closing auction plus TAL.

Does every Spanish stock trade continuously?

No. BME’s SIBE fixing mode keeps securities in an opening auction until noon, sets a first auction price at 12:00 PM and a second at 4:00 PM.

BME Growth follows the same broad distinction: depending on liquidity, securities can trade continuously or under fixing with auctions at 12:00 and 16:00.

What time will Madrid close on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31, 2026?

BME’s current 2026 calendar confirms that both dates are shortened sessions open until 2:00 PM CET.

However, Sociedad de Bolsas’ 2026 SIBE calendar instruction says that the detailed timetable for those two sessions will be published through a separate Operating Instruction.

CalendarHours therefore uses the confirmed 14:00 endpoint in the live engine but does not invent a 2026-specific split between continuous trading, closing auction and Trading At Last before BME publishes that detailed instruction.

Is Madrid closed on Epiphany, National Day or Immaculate Conception?

No in 2026. January 6, October 12 and December 8 do not appear in BME’s official list of full non-trading days.

This is why a generic Spain public-holiday calendar cannot be substituted for the BME exchange calendar.

Latibex does not open with standard Spanish equities

Latibex is BME’s euro-denominated market for Latin American stocks. It uses an 8:30–11:30 AM opening auction and then an 11:30 AM–5:30 PM open session.

That later opening is another reason not to assign one “Madrid Stock Exchange open time” to every BME product.

Do BME Growth stocks use Madrid’s main hours?

BME Growth securities can trade similarly to the main market, but their modality depends on liquidity. BME states that they may trade continuously or under fixing with auctions at 12:00 and 16:00.

The live answer on this page remains anchored to the main SIBE continuous-equity intent while explicitly surfacing the alternative fixing model.

Does the Madrid Stock Exchange change clocks?

Yes. Madrid uses CET (UTC+1) in winter and CEST (UTC+2) in summer.

CalendarHours uses `Europe/Madrid`, so the 8:30 opening auction, 9:00 continuous open, 17:30 close and 17:45 TAL endpoint convert correctly across the European daylight-saving cycle.

Does the Spanish stock market close for lunch?

No. Standard continuously traded SIBE equities have no scheduled midday lunch break.

Continuous trading runs after the opening auction until 5:30 PM, although a security can temporarily enter a volatility auction.
