Why Does Maine Feel “Early” Without a Different Time Zone?

Is Maine Switching to Permanent Daylight Saving Time?

Not under the rules currently in effect. Maine’s current statute, 1 MRSA §151, says the state will use Eastern Daylight Time year-round if federal law or regulation permits year-round daylight time. The 2025 amendment also directs the Secretary of State to announce the effective date when that condition is met.

As of August 2026, federal proposals for permanent or optional year-round daylight time remain legislative proposals rather than enacted authority. Maine therefore continues to switch between EST and EDT under the current federal DST schedule.
