Does All of Illinois Have the Same Time?
Yes. Illinois uses Central Time statewide. Illinois has 102 counties, and none lies in Eastern or Mountain Time. Chicago, Springfield, Rockford, Peoria, Champaign and Aurora therefore follow the same CST/CDT schedule.
102 countiesEvery Illinois county follows the same official Central Time rules.
No in-state zone lineYou do not change official time zones while traveling between Illinois cities or counties.
One seasonal scheduleWhen Illinois changes from CST to CDT or back, the whole state changes together.
What Happens at the Illinois–Indiana Time-Zone Boundary?
Illinois remains Central Time at the state line, but Indiana is split. The federal Eastern–Central boundary in 49 CFR §71.5 runs through Indiana county lines before reaching the western boundary of Indiana. That means a trip east from Illinois may stay in Central Time in parts of northwestern or southwestern Indiana, or may move one hour ahead into Eastern Time depending on the destination.
This is why “Illinois and Indiana are one hour apart” is not a reliable statewide rule. For travel near Chicago and northwest Indiana, or near the lower Wabash/Ohio River region, use the exact Indiana destination rather than the state name alone.
