Does All of Iowa Have the Same Time?
Yes. Iowa uses Central Time statewide. The state has 99 counties, and none is assigned to Mountain, Pacific or Eastern Time. Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Sioux City, Iowa City, Waterloo, Ames and Council Bluffs therefore follow the same CST/CDT schedule.
99 countiesEvery Iowa county uses the same official Central Time rules.
No in-state boundaryYou never change official time zones simply by traveling between Iowa communities.
One seasonal switchWhen Iowa moves between CST and CDT, the entire state changes together.
When Does the Time Zone Change West of Iowa?
Not when you first cross Iowa’s western border. The parts of Nebraska and South Dakota directly adjacent to Iowa remain in Central Time. The federal Central–Mountain boundary lies farther west inside those states.
Under 49 CFR §71.7, South Dakota’s boundary follows a route centered around the Missouri River and western county lines, while Nebraska’s boundary runs through the state well west of the Missouri River border with Iowa. The practical result: a drive from Iowa into Omaha or southeastern South Dakota does not require a clock change, but a longer trip west can eventually enter Mountain Time.
