Why Does Michigan Have America/Detroit & America/Menominee?

The separate IANA identifiers preserve different civil-time histories. Federal records show that Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson and Menominee counties were moved from Eastern Time to Central Time effective April 29, 1973. IANA therefore maintains America/Menominee for this region, while America/Detroit represents most of Michigan and its own historical DST record.

The current federal boundary in 49 CFR §71.5(a) follows county lines around the four Central Time counties. The regulation also assigns municipalities located directly on the Eastern–Central boundary line to Central Standard Time.
