Missouri Borders Eight States — Do Any Change the Clock?

No immediate Missouri border crossing changes the time zone. Missouri touches Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. The areas directly across all eight state borders use Central Time, even though Kentucky, Tennessee and Nebraska contain another time zone farther away.

Missouri Standard Time vs Daylight Time

Missouri currently observes the U.S. daylight-saving schedule. The entire state changes clocks together because there is no internal time-zone boundary.

How Missouri Time Works

Six facts explain nearly every Missouri time-zone question, from statewide Central Time to the Kansas City state line, St. Louis's independent status and current DST proposals.

01 · Statewide

Missouri Has One Time Zone

The entire state uses Central Time. There is no Eastern, Mountain or Pacific Time area inside Missouri.

02 · Local Government

114 Counties + Independent St. Louis

Missouri has 114 counties plus the City of St. Louis as a separate governing entity; all share the same Central Time clock.

03 · Kansas City

The State Line Does Not Change Time

Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas City, Kansas both use Central Time, so the metro's state line does not create a one-hour shift.

04 · St. Louis

St. Louis & Illinois Match

Crossing the Mississippi River between St. Louis and Metro East, Illinois does not change the clock because both sides use Central Time.

05 · IANA

Use America/Chicago

America/Chicago is the correct date-aware IANA zone for current and future Missouri civil-time calculations.

06 · DST

2026 Bills Have Not Changed the Clock

Missouri lawmakers considered competing permanent-time proposals in 2026, but the current CST/CDT system remains in force.

Does All of Missouri Have the Same Time?

Yes. Missouri uses Central Time statewide. Missouri law divides the state into 114 counties and one independent city. The independent jurisdiction is the City of St. Louis, which separated from St. Louis County in 1876. Despite that unusual local-government structure, every Missouri county and St. Louis share the same CST/CDT rules.

No in-state zone lineYou never change official time zones simply by traveling between Missouri communities.

Is Missouri Changing Daylight Saving Time?

No change is in force as of August 20, 2026. Missouri considered several competing proposals during the 2026 regular session. HB 1758, the “Daylight Saving as New Standard Time Pact,” passed the Missouri House and was first read in the Senate on April 28, but did not become law. SB 1326 proposed a similar pact and remained referred to the Senate General Laws Committee. SB 1072 instead proposed permanent standard time and remained referred to the Government Efficiency Committee.

The practical answer remains simple: Missouri continues to use CST during standard time and CDT during daylight saving time. In 2026, clocks moved forward on March 8 and return on November 1 under the current federal schedule.

Missouri on the U.S. Time Zone Map

Missouri sits entirely inside Central Time. The U.S. map is especially useful here because Missouri touches eight states, yet every adjoining border area remains on Central Time. Other zones appear only after traveling farther into certain neighboring states.

Sources & Methodology

CalendarHours uses location-aware, date-aware time-zone logic rather than permanently hardcoding Missouri as UTC−6 or UTC−5. America/Chicago supplies the Central Time rules used throughout the state.

The IANA Time Zone Database is the primary rules source for civil offsets and transitions. The latest release verified for this page is tzdb 2026c, released July 8, 2026. U.S. daylight-saving dates are checked against NIST. Missouri's 114 counties plus independent St. Louis are checked against state law and Missouri government geographic data, and the 2026 DST proposals are checked against official Missouri House and Senate bill records.
